Across Australia, we are fortunate to receive government rebates for solar powered systems for both homes and commercial businesses. Energis will organize your government rebate for you and supply you with a high quality solar powered system, at a discounted price from the rebates the government offers. So you don’t have to do a single thing, but here is some information anyway on how it all works.

There are two main types of rebate available when purchasing a solar powered system:

  1. Large Scale Solar Power RebateIf your solar power system is larger than 100kW, then you are eligible for a large scale solar power rebate. A large scale solar power rebate means you will receive a regular stream of income each month from the government. For more information on large scale solar power rebates, visit this link http://www.cleanenergyregulator.gov.au/RET/About-the-Renewable-Energy-Target/How-the-scheme-works/Large-scale-Renewable-Energy-Target
  2. Small Scale Solar Power RebateIf your solar power system is less than 100kW, then you qualify for small scale solar power rebates and earn what’s called, small scale technology certificates.

Small Scale Technology Certificate Rebates

Every kWh worth of solar power that is installed to either a residential property or commercial property, earns a small scale technology certificate assigned to it from the government. The small scale technology certificate is an upfront discount for your solar powered system.

Victoria is a large state with various zones, based on the zones you are in; you pick up the certificates based on the size of your solar powered system. For example, in the suburbs around Melbourne, you get 88 small scale technology certificates for a 5kw system. The spot price for the certificates varies between $30 and $40 per certificate. You can calculate how many certificates you can earn on the Small Scale Technology Certificates Calculator: https://www.rec-registry.gov.au/rec-registry/app/calculators/sgu-stc-calculator

The customer can retain these certificates directly or the solar retailers can have them on their behalf. In nearly all cases, the customer will assign the rights of the certificates to the solar retailers themselves, so that the retailer is able to sell the system to the purchaser directly at a discounted price.

Customers very rarely claim the certificates themselves, because they would have to pay the full price without the discount to the solar retailer and then claim their rebate afterwards. This would not result in the customer making a big saving. There is a lot of paperwork involved and they would have to submit their request to the government. At Energis, we deal with the paperwork of government rebates every day. As an Energis customer, you needn’t worry about the paperwork and the experts here at Energis will organize your government rebate for you.

Feed-in tariff

Victoria offers a feed- in tariff for people creating more energy than they need and who are supplying the network grid with clean solar energy. States such as New South Wales and Queensland, do not offer a feed in-tariff- so Victoria is a brilliant place to be when investing in a solar powered system. If you are regularly feeding energy into the grid, then you will receive a bill in credit from your electricity retailer. If you supply the grid with more energy than you are taking from the grid, you might eventually receive a cheque at the end of the year, reimbursing you for all the clean energy you have kindly given to the grid. Unfortunately, you will only receive approximately 6c per kW of electricity that you give to the grid, but you pay approximately 24c per kW of electricity that you take from the grid- so you will not gain a huge benefit from giving energy to the grid. But you are making huge savings by not having to rely on the grid as much, thanks to your new solar panels.
