5kW solar systems are popular for residential installations, covering the electricity needs of most of the Australian families from 4 to 6 people and an average bill of $400-$600 per quarter. In Victoria, this kind of system will produce a yearly average of 20kWh per day depending on your location and other sunlight factors: roof orientation, shade, weather…

A 5kW solar system consists of 5kW solar panels, (usually about 20 panels) a 5kW solar inverter, a racking system for mounting the panels, electrical switchgear for protection and others necessary components.

What Is the payback period?

Such a system will save your households thousands of dollars over the installation lifetime. Most of the residential systems pay themselves off within 3 to 5 years. The payback period depends on the price of the installation and the energy usage. The price itself depends on the quality of the installation and the components.

What happens at night?

Solar power systems produce energy only during daytime and send the electricity back to the grid if not consumed. When the installation doesn’t produce energy or when the consumption needs are higher than the production, the electricity is supplied from the grid.

To enjoy your solar energy day and night, the installation can feature batteries. During daytime, the electricity produced but not used is stored in the battery. When the battery is fully charged, the electricity is fed into the grid.

With a 5kW system, the maximum battery storage available is 10kWh. With an average daily production of 20kWh (average production for a 5kW system), if 9kWh is used during the day the balance of 10kWh will be stored in the battery for later use. The excess 1kWh left after fully charging the batteries will be fed into the grid.

Of course, a 5kW power system with 10kWh storage is pricier than a 5kW system by itself but savings are also more important as less electricity is taken from the grid.

More than 1.8 million of Australian households are now equipped with a solar power system. Why aren’t you?
