What sort of places should we look to when trying to cool down our homes in summer? The North Pole? Iceland? How about the hottest place in our solar system?

The Air Conditioning landscape is rapidly changing due to advancing technologies in Solar Air Conditioning, creating large energy and greenhouse gas savings, and therefore money savings.

The Australian Institute of Refrigeration, Air Conditioning and Heating (Or AIRAH to avoid the mouthful) have launched a Solar Cooling Special Technical Group to support the implementation of Solar Cooling systems.

“As the sun beats down and air conditioners are turned up, what could be more logical than solar air conditioning? And with enthusiasm for solving Australia’s electricity grid issues, solar air conditioning could be one of the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning industry’s answers to reducing both greenhouse gas issues and electricity infrastructure costs,” AIRAH chief executive Peter Wilkinson said.

This technology is also being utilised by many commercial groups turning to solar. For example the Echuca Hospital in Victoria recently installed a solar cooling system, which is now saving them $60,000 every year! No wonder more and more people are switching to solar energy.
