Push Back the DeLorean! Here’s the real car of the Future.
The University of New South Wales (UNSW) have created a two-door solar electric hybrid vehicle named eVe.
The solar car features around 4 square metres of solar cells, a lightweight carbon fibre shell, regenerative braking and aerodynamic features that means that while it has twice the front end of its previous vehicles eliminating drag.
Sunswift (the UNSW Solar Racing Team) currently hold the Guinness World Record for the world’s fastest solar-powered vehicle and has won its class in the World Solar Challenge from Darwin to Adelaide for the last two years.
“It’s a new direction and a new challenge. And it’s a new image for solar vehicles. Everyone gets electric vehicles now, this is a solar range-extended electric vehicle,” says Sam Patterson; Project Director.
The eVe can do approximately 500kms without the sun, and a further 150kms with the sun. Patterson thinks it could travel from Sydney to Melbourne without a recharge just by doubling the amount of batteries.
