Big words from Dr Alan Finkel- introduced as Australia’s new Chief Scientist by Prime Minister, Malcolm Turnbull.
Dr Finkel is a huge advocate for solar power and a ‘coal free’ Australia. His new role will be strongly targeted towards the future of Australia’s energy and his idea is that Australia will eventually be using 100% renewable energy and slowly phasing out the use of coal.
Dr Finkel also recently spoke about the benefits of battery storage for solar powered systems. His views are that if battery storage can be approved and also made more affordable, the target of achieving zero emission energy production becomes a more realistic one.
With battery storage technology becoming more and more advanced, the systems will become more affordable and the benefits will reshape Australia’s energy future. A recent report from the Climate Council indicates that installing battery storage systems with solar panels could be the cheapest way to access electricity in as little as three years time as battery storage systems are already revolutionising the future for solar power. The Climate Council also found that half of all households in Australia were predicted to adopt solar systems with battery storage, with the market potentially growing to a huge $24 billion
Australia is already on the radar for becoming the target market for battery storage systems, due to new technology (including Tesla’s new Powerwall battery device), increasing electricity rates and our sunny climate.
Dr Finkel told reporters he has a vision for an ‘electric planet’ and that he wants Australia to use, ‘no oil, gas or coal’. He is also a strong advocate for electric cars and claims that eventually everyone will be driving electric cars like him and driving entirely ‘emission free’.
Our new appointment of Chief Scientist for Australia proves an exciting future for Australia’s energy and here at Energis, we hope that goals for a renewable energy future are met as a result of this.
