Light candles!
Lighting candles is a great way to save some money on your electricity bill and also create a warm, Christmassy atmosphere! Lighting the room with candles will save you having to run your light bulbs and will also create a beautiful Christmas smell. Why not buy some Christmassy candles such as pine and eucalyptus or cinnamon? If there are lots of kids in the house and you’re looking for a hazard-free option, why not buy battery operated candles that flicker in different mood settings!
LED Christmas lights!
Consider throwing out your old incandescent Christmas lights and swapping them for some super efficient LED Christmas lights! LED lights use 90% less electricity than typical, incandescent Christmas lights and also last a lot longer! You can purchase some beautiful blue glow LED lights, whilst the old incandescent lights give off a flat yellow colour. Read more about the environmental benefits of LED lights here.
Cheat the Christmas Dinner and Use the Microwave!
Try to use the microwave or toaster for smaller tasks when preparing your Christmas dinner for your loved ones. Try to only use the oven when necessary for cooking the turkey and make sure you keep lids on your pots when using the stove. All these tiny changes can make a huge difference when it comes to saving energy over the Christmas period!
Ditch the car!
Tonnes of people every year are using their car over the Christmas period to get to the shops and to get to family and friend’s houses. Save yourself some fuel and leave the car at home! If you can, take a walk to the nearest shops or to your friend’s houses. Also remember that it’s obviously not a good idea to use the car to get somewhere after a few too many Christmas drinks!
Reduce the size of your outdoor light display!
It’s wonderful fun to put up lights outside your house to get into the festive spirit- especially for the little ones! Unfortunately, a huge light display outside the front of your house might give you a shock when you receive your electricity bill, so make sure you’re sitting down when you open it! Alternatively, be mindful of the amount of lights you are using and electricity needed for putting up that huge light up inflatable Santa Claus! Try to use LED lights outside wherever possible or solar powered decorations to conserve more energy and remember… less is best.
