Steve is here to help us understand the ins and outs of Small-scale Technology Certificates also known as STCs.
What are STCs and why do they exist?
“Small-scale Technology Certificates AKA STCs are part of the Federal Government’s Renewable Energy Scheme. They want Victoria to achieve its renewable energy goal by 2030. So, to help encourage businesses and homeowners to put solar installations on their properties, the STC program came into play. Any solar installed between 1 to 100 kW gets a rebate under the scheme!”
How are they calculated?
“It is based on how big the system is and where you’re located. For example, in Metropolitan Melbourne a typical 6.5 kW will have a total amount of STCs of 92.”
How will STCs affect the price of my solar power system?
“Think of STCs like shares; the government will buy up the STCs as they are created and the price of them is determined by a free market and values them accordingly. You can save up to 30%* off on your system with the STC scheme and that isn’t including other state government incentives!”
How do I know if I’m getting the correct amount of STCs?
“Going with a good company for starters, that you know has your best interest at heart, like Energis. Also, if you want to figure out the dollar value, there are many sites available where you can go on and enter your location and system size details and get an accurate STC amount/value. Solar providers cannot change the number of STCs you are entitled to.”

How often does the STC price decrease?
“It decreases in value every year on January 1st until 2030! With Government incentives such as the Victorian Solar Rebate and the STC scheme in place, now is the time to consider going solar with Energis!”
