Meet John, one of our resident solar experts! He has been working at Energis for almost 2 years now and is truly flourishing within the residential solar industry.

We asked John for some insight into what factors you should consider before purchasing a solar PV system, what to look out for and what solar PV system/products he would purchase and why!

What are the 3 most important things to consider before purchasing a solar PV system?

“The first thing you need to consider is your electricity usage. You need to establish which size system will suit you, which will obviously be assisted by your solar retailer when you are initially receiving a quote. Secondly, you do need to make sure you are buying quality products – a little research goes a long way as well as having a trustworthy retailer, someone that you feel comfortable with that is going to look after your best interest. A company with a good reputation that completes high-quality installations.  So essentially what you are getting out of the system is going to last a long time and perform well for you“.

What should I look for in a solar provider?

Work experience – A good provider will have plenty of experience completing different types of jobs – It could be years of experience doing both residential and commercial. You need to look for consultants that really know their product well as well as getting a company that is Clean Energy Council Approved. Also, you need a company that follows all of the industry standards and regulations so you know that you are getting quality and something that will last”.

Can you give me some red flags to look out for when purchasing a solar PV system?

If it’s too good to be true, then it probably is. If the company withholds the specifics regarding the brands and model numbers of the products, then that’s a big red flag. You as a customer need to know exactly what you are getting, including who will be completing the install and their accreditation numbers. Are they class A electricians?  Are they naming the products and model numbers in the quote? Ensure that they are ticking all your boxes”.

What should I take into consideration when choosing a particular type of panel?

“What you should be making sure is that you are not being pushed into buying cheap, old stock that’s been sitting around for years. You want to make sure the panels you are purchasing are current, which will help ensure that your warranty is current as well”.

Is there a particular brand of inverter that you like over others? Why?

“It will always depend on your situation, but either way you should always be looking for an invertor from a multinational company, that’s publicly listed and that has a decent warranty. Getting brand specific, ABB, Fronius and Solar Edge are always a great option…Ultimately, if I had to choose, I’d go with a Solar Edge inverter. It has the longest warranty, a fantastic reputation, it’s DC optimized and performs better in those shaded situations, it’s very sophisticated, you can monitor it on a module level and it’s also excellent for battery compatibility”.
