Meet Alex! He has been working at Energis as a photovoltaic and solar energy engineer for two and a half years now. He is here to provide us with some understanding of the importance of site inspections and what to expect.
What is a site inspection?
“A solar site inspection is when someone comes to your property and looks at the condition of the roof and the condition of the electrical circuit. Basically, we find out what may be a potential hurdle before going ahead and putting on your solar panels. As an engineer, I work with the sales consultants to determine the best pricing, product placement, design and safety for a resident’s or businesses property.”
What could happen without a site inspection?
“It would be an engineering disaster! So many things could go wrong. For example, if you do not complete a site inspection, then you cannot 100% confirm the roof type. You could have the stock and solar contractors arrive at your property and they will NOT be able to complete the job, which leads to your installation being pushed back and potentially cost you more. A solar company should not waste anyone’s time.”
Do I need to get a site inspection after the installation is complete?
“Normally, you are not required to have an inspection after the install. However, at Energis every rooftop installation is inspected based on the Energy Safe Victoria (ESV) legislation. Our electricians are given a checklist and are required to tick all the boxes as well as send pictures and videos on the day of the installation. These pictures and videos are then assessed by the engineers and if necessary, an additional site inspection can be undertaken. It just ensures that the system and its design is the best it can be for the customer.”
How long do site inspections take?
“It depends if it is a residential or commercial installation. Naturally, commercial properties will take longer due to the sheer size of the area that needs inspecting. To give you a rough estimate, a residential property could take anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour. However, it is all dependant on the property.”
