Solar Missionaries Preach the Sun.
Steve Prosser and his son Kale recently made a trip to East Timor. Not to taste the divine cuisine or see the beautiful beaches though. They were on a mission. A mission to deliver a solar hot water system to the Bairo Pite medical clinic.
Even though it’s called a clinic, it’s closer to a small hospital consisting of 8 – 10 buildings. The solar hot water system was donated to the maternity ward.
“They’ve got no hot water over there. We found out while we were there that the Timorese people, when they have a baby, they bathe the baby in warm water and the ladies bathe themselves for so many days in hot water and they also drink hot water for so many days. It’s their ritual,” said Prosser.
Unfortunately for the locals, only a few maternity clinics have a supply of hot water. The main hospital’s maternity ward doesn’t even have hot water. The newly installed solar system is a welcomed addition.
Currently a lot of Timorese women are avoiding clinics to have babies because of the lack of hot water. They’re more comfortable conceiving in the cooking area of their homes. The lack of medical supervision brings a higher mortality rate.
The clinic is expected to have an eightfold increase because of Steve and Kale’s generous donation of the solar hot water system.
