led light

Taking care of our environment is something that we should all be held responsible for and everyone needs to make a change to make the world a better place. It’s taken a while, but now more and more people are swapping their old incandescent light bulbs for LED light bulbs. Besides the fact that LED light bulbs are a more cost effective lighting solution, they are also environmentally friendly and you may not be aware of how harmful your ordinary incandescent light bulbs can be to our planet.

But first, what is an LED light bulb?

A light-Emitting Diode (or LED) is a compound semiconductor device that converts electricity into light. LED light bulbs are a new, more efficient and cost-effective way to light your home or business environment.

But why are they kind to the environment?

Carbon emissions

LED light bulbs produce less carbon emissions which are harmful to our environment. Ordinary light bulbs can produce high levels of CO2 (carbon dioxide). CO2 contributes roughly 84% of all greenhouse gases emitted by humans and this is generally from burning fossil fuels for electricity (your light bulbs). When the earth receives incoming heat from the sun, it simultaneously radiates heat away into space. Greenhouse gases such as CO2 in the atmosphere reduce the amount of heat radiated away from the earth and as a result of this, more heat is kept on our planet. If you had 30 Incandescent bulbs in your home, you would be producing over 2 tonnes in carbon emissions. The same amount of fluorescent bulbs would produce 481 kg/yr whilst 30 LED light bulbs only create 206 kg/yr.

Mercury

You will find mercury in fluorescent light bulbs which like CO2, is also harmful to our environment. Mercury is particularly harmful for the environment because it can accumulate in living organisms. Mercury can have devastating effects on the human’s nervous system, brain and spinal cord. Fish are hugely affected by mercury and because fish is the main source of food for birds and other animals (not forgetting humans!) the mercury levels can seriously damage the health of these species. LED lights however, contain no mercury or any other toxic elements. When businesses use fluorescent light bulbs in their building, they are contaminating the environment when they eventually have to expose of them. They also need to arrange safe disposal via a registered waste carrier. By switching to LED lights, you are avoiding the complications and hassle of arranging safe disposal.

All it takes is for everyone to make a small change to make a big difference.
