Solar power systems can be worth a lot of money and are a valuable asset to somebody’s rooftop. Unfortunately, some find themselves victims of theft when their costly rooftop solar panels are stolen.

Protect yourself from Solar Panel Theft!

Some solar panel thieves disguise themselves as solar installation companies so that when neighbours see them on someone’s rooftop, they assume they’re doing maintenance or even installing a new system when really, they are stealing an already existing system.
Fortunately, when these thieves come to sell on the solar panels, they are usually caught out for selling stolen goods. Second-hand solar panels can be in high demand because people are eager to save some money on purchasing solar, but this is another risk you take when you don’t buy brand new. Read more here about purchasing second hand solar panels.

Theft appears to have dropped in recent months as prices for rooftop solar also drops. But insurance agents, solar energy consultants, and law-enforcement officers all say that the problem is real. Solar panels are easy to install and therefore can also be easy to steal.

Protect you and your solar panels by following these golden rules:

  1. Do not loudly boast about the cost of your solar panels. You never know who is listening and by loudly announcing what your system is worth, you might attract unwanted attention.

  1. Consider installing a security system to your rooftop that sounds an alarm or shines a light when it detects motion. A burglar alarm will notify you when there’s someone on your rooftop so you can call emergency services.

  1. Ask your installers for the unique serial numbers for your solar panels. If your solar panels are stolen, at least you’ll have the number for them to give to the police.

  1. Don’t leave around ladders outside the house or in the garden. Ladders might assist the thieves making it easier for them to gain access to your rooftop.

  1. Inform your home insurance policy of your new asset to your rooftop. Make sure your solar powered system is part of your home insurance policy.

Do not try to apprehend a burglar yourself. Call the police if you notice your panels have gone and inform your home insurance company.
