The Victoria Government has announced an additional $20 million tender investing in a large-scale energy storage project.
The government is currently seeking for proposals from companies to install up to 100 megawatts of grid-scale energy storage by the end of 2018.
Battery storage brings energy security and a strong resiliency on renewable energy, and will help protect fragile spots across Victoria. The government has said a 20 megawatt battery storage system could supply power to a town the size of the Bendigo or Ballarat for up to four hours during peak demand periods and help avoid outages.
“Storage of this size is a first for Victoria and will drive innovation in our electricity sector and modernise the network – it means more investment and more jobs” the release said. This publication appeared after South Australia suffered from a blackout, launching a $500 million project to secure its electricity supply. The project includes a battery facility to store renewable energy and a 250-megawatt gas-fired power plant.
A task force was published by Grattan Institute reporting about the failure of the national privatised electricity by delivering low prices to consumers. In Victoria, the profit margin for retailers is about 13 per cent – more than double the margin that is considered fair according to the report.
It is incredibly good news that Victoria and South Australia are taking a stand in Solar revolution, as this will generate an important impact on the reduction of Climate Change.
