It is great that solar energy has become something that is well recognised as a genuine and viable source of energy.
Solar technology becomes more advanced everyday and people are finally understanding the importance of using solar energy and reducing carbon emissions. But unfortunately with a lot of talk, comes a lot of false information and people are disregarding the facts about solar panels.
Let me set the record straight …
‘Solar energy is no good because it only works during the day’
Ok, unfortunately this is true. Solar energy works during daylight hours and the sun is what generates the electricity. But that doesn’t mean that solar energy is useless for your home or business. All the electricity you use during the day will be generated from your solar panels and not being bought from the network grid. If you have batteries for your solar power system, then you are able to conserve all the excess energy you have generated during the day and store it in your batteries to use later in the evening. Therefore, you are using solar energy day and night. If you don’t have a battery storage system, you are still making significant savings from relying on solar energy for your usage during the day- less is being bought from the network grid. ‘Solar panels are too expensive’
Most people are put off by purchasing a solar powered system for their home or business because of the initial cost of the system. The truth is, since 2010, solar power system costs have dropped approximately 50% cent in price and will continue to drop. A solar powered system for a high energy consuming commercial business for example, could pay for their system with their savings within as little as 2 to 3 years. Government rebate incentives are a huge advantage in purchasing a system, as the government endorses the use of solar energy to reduce carbon emissions and the return on investments can be quite rewarding. ‘Solar panels need maintaining’
Well this one definitely isn’t true. Solar panels have no moving parts and you don’t need to maintain them. Solar panels very rarely need cleaning unless your panels are likely to get dirty from falling debris or if solar panels are installed nearby a dirty factory for example. The rain will wash your panels and you might decide to clean your panels every once in a while to clear away any dirt or bird droppings- but this won’t need to be done often. Solar panels will only work less efficiently if they are significantly dirty or covered in leaves for example. You can read more about maintaining solar panels here.
‘Solar panels are eyesores’
Yes, solar panels aren’t pretty, pink and sparkly. But they are becoming more and more common and your house isn’t going to look out of place with solar panels. Solar panels have become increasingly popular in Australia because of our sunny climate and your installers should take into consideration how you want your setup to look. Black solar panels can appear shiny and stylish and lots of modern, new-build homes are built with solar panels. Just make sure your installers listen to your requests to create an attractive looking set up. On large scale commercial business properties, solar panels are rarely seen on high rooftops and more often than not, people won’t even notice that they are there.
