Once you have selected a solar retailer (read our article: Checklist of things you should look for when choosing your solar company) and your system has been designed and pre-approved (if applicable- read our article: Solar capacity pre-approval), the installation can start. The installation as such takes up to 3 weeks depending on the size of your system and the weather conditions.

Now that you have brand new solar panels on your roof, it is time to enjoy the sun and start saving, right? Well, not just yet…

1- Inspection

Once the panels are installed, the next step is the electrical inspection. Your installer sends a Certificate of Electrical Safety to the Energy Safe Victoria and arranges an inspection. This inspection must be carried out by a relevant state electrical authority within 10 days of installation.

2- Meter upgrade

Following this inspection, your installer sends the required document to your electricity retailer. The retailer will notify your distributor to change your meter. If you have a traditional meter, it needs to be replaced with a smart meter. Smart meters make it possible to record the energy you will export to the grid or the electricity you will import from the grid.

This process will occur within 3 weeks after the retailer has lodged the required documents from the electrical inspection.

3- Start saving!

Once the new meter is installed, your system is ready to be switched on!

4- Maintenance

Once your system is up and running it is important to make sure it is working at its optimal performance. Even if your solar system requires very little maintenance, you’ll find here our Maintenance tips for your solar panels.
