Plans are underway to create a 1.17MW solar PV system on the roof of Adelaide airport’s short-term car park.

Adelaide Airport was proud to announce later last week that they will be installing the largest airport rooftop solar power system in the whole of Australia. The proposed system is expected to cut their energy consumption and also their carbon emissions, by almost 10%.

Back in 2008, Adelaide Airport unveiled a 114 kW solar power system situated on a roof in Terminal One. This was the largest commercial solar installation in South Australia and the installation was funded by the South Australian Government. Pushing their efforts in reducing carbon emissions even further, whilst assisting the government with their renewable energy targets, their new solar powered system will consist of 4,500 solar panels. This scale of system is the equivalent of roughly 300 residential solar powered systems.

Plans are moving fast and work is expected to begin in December and be complete by as early as April 2016.

And it’s not just Adelaide Airport that’s leading the way in solar technology, Alice Springs Airport is also jumping on the solar powered bandwagon. Back in August, The Alice Springs Airport in the Northern Territory, announced plans to expand their existing solar powered system with more than 1000 PV panels on the roof of their long-term car park.

Solar powered systems nowadays are a huge asset to any business. They generate significant savings whilst also branding that business with a proud environmentally friendly label. If you are a business owner, then solar power is something you should seriously be considering to improve business operations and keep your running costs at a minimum.
