When considering what type of Solar system to install at your home or business there are 2 main options:
- A traditional string inverter setup where the panels are connected to a main inverter
- An optimised system in which a main inverter is still utilised, but there is also a device called an optimiser attached to the back of every panel or every second panel to provide panel maximum power point tracking.
Whilst a traditional string inverter setup is sufficient in many circumstances, there are three main benefits to Solar Panel Optimisation which can assist customers in achieving better overall system efficiency & performance in a number of common conditions found in the installation of solar.
Firstly, Optimised Systems benefit from the fact that there is individual Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) to each panel. This means the panels work independently of each other. This is particularly good where a system is subject to shading issues due to surrounding trees, roof equipment or roof design for example. Under these conditions, whilst some panels may experience shading at certain times of the day, the performance of the other panels in the system will be unaffected. In comparison, in a traditional string inverter setup, if there is shading on even one panel the performance of all the panels in that string will be affected.
Secondly, Along with the real-time full system production monitoring and fault notification, Optimised Systems also provided the added ability to monitor individual panel output. This can be especially helpful in detecting an underperforming panel if it was to occur at any stage, further minimising downtime and loss of production.
Thirdly, Inverter & Optimiser equipment warranty periods are some of the longest on the market. In the case of SolarEdge equipment, the Inverter comes with a standard 12 year warranty which can be extended to 20 years and the Optimisers come with a 25 year warranty.
Whilst the initial cost outlay on an Optimised System is a little more, the added immediate & long term benefits achieved through panel optimisation, can far outweigh the extra cost through better system efficiency, superior monitoring capabilities and longer warranty periods providing customers greater piece of mind in the performance and longevity of their solar investment.
