When looking for a solar retailer, one of the most important things to consider is the warranty offered. It is important to know what you are signing for. There are many solar retailers around, but not all are equivalent. Going solar is a long-term investment and it is important to choose a reliable company offering a maximum coverage to your system.
The warranty is usually broken up into 4 different ones:
- The performance warranty
- The product warranty
- The installation warranty
- The inverter warranty
- The performance warranty
The performance warranty is the 25 years warranty (industry standards.) This warranty covers the natural degradation of the cells and you will be covered in case the electricity production falls below its predetermined percentage rated capacity.
- The product warranty
The product warranty covers any defects in material and lasts for a minimum of 10 years. As solar panels contain no moving parts and are up on your roof, it is unlikely you’ll have problems with these parts. However, it remains important to compare the product warranty offered and find out the following:
- Is the warranty form the panel installer or the manufacturer?
- Who will cover the shipping and servicing costs in case of problems?
- Is my installer reliable? Will the company be still around in 10 years?
- What are the maintenance requirements that can invalid my warranty if not undertaken?
- The installation warranty
The installation warranty covers workmanship related issues. It states that the installation is done correctly and the system will perform as expected. Solar installation warranties vary depending on the installer. Some offer none, others provide a 5 years warranty.
When comparing the installation warranty, not only compare the length of the warranty but also what is covered precisely.
- The inverter warranty
It is very important to make sure your system carries an inverter warranty. This warranty should last at least 5 years, preferably 10 years. Make sure you read all the conditions. The inverter warranty should offer a replacement warranty. Same as the product warranty on panels, check who would have to cover the shipping cost in case of malfunction.
What about the insurance?
Most of the home insurances cover solar panels as they are considered as part of the home but it is important to notify your insurance company before the installation. In case of damage by extreme weather condition or unfortunate circumstance, the system will most likely be covered. We recommend referring to your insurance company.
